Position in Athens, begins July 1, 2022


Position: The American School of Classical Studies at Athens seeks an active scholar and experienced archaeologist to direct its excavations at the Athenian Agora. Familiarity with the School’s program of excavation and research at Athenian Agora is highly desirable. The Director works with the staff at Athens in developing and conducting the fieldwork and documenting the results. The Director supervises the collections of the excavation and the publication of all finds. The Director administers the School’s plant and facilities at the Athenian Agora. The Director participates in the School’s activities, including its academic program and the instruction of students at the School through its field training program. The Director identifies projects for funding and helps to identify possible sources of funds for the Agora. Good command of Modern Greek is essential. Candidates must demonstrate strong qualities of leadership and articulate clearly their vision for the future of the excavations.

The term of residency at the Agora is flexible in order to accommodate applicants who teach on semester and quarter terms or other university teaching requirements. The initial appointment is for three to five years. It begins on July 1, 2022, and is renewable. Salary and benefits commensurate with rank and experience, housing and travel provided.

The Director of the Excavations at the Athenian Agora reports to the Director of the School and through the Director to the Managing Committee.
